What is Arginine?

Arginine is an amino acid that is used in cosmetics and skincare products that are used to help protect the skin from free radicals, increase the skin’s visible hydration levels, and potentially support collagen production.

In 1886, arginine was first isolated from lupin and pumpkin seedlings by the German chemist Ernst Schulze. It is an alpha-amino acid that is used in the biosynthesis of proteins. In addition to building protein, arginine releases nitric oxide in the blood. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels in the bloodstream, which may help certain circulatory conditions. Arginine also plays an important role in cell division, wound healing, immune function, the release of hormones, and the production of growth hormone.

Arginine can be found in animal products such as meat, dairy, and eggs, as well as several plant sources including grains, beans, and nuts. Arginine is also available as an oral supplement. Most healthy people do not need to supplement with arginine because it is a component of all protein-containing foods and can also be synthesized by the body.

What is adenosine?

Adenosine is present in all types of plant, animal, and human life. Let’s all rewind to our high school biology classes. Remember ATP? Well, ATP = adenosine triphosphate, just one of the derivatives of adenosine. It’s an absolutely essential, high-energy molecule that hoards the energy we literally need to live and exist. It’s found naturally in our bodies, but for cosmetics, it is extracted from yeast.

What is Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract?

Polygonum Cuspidatum root extract is a plant whose root is a good source of the potent polyphenolic antioxidant trans-resveratrol, which is considered the most bioavailable form of resveratrol.

Also known as Japanese knotweed, Mexican bamboo, and, in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Hu Zhang, this plant not only helps thwart free radicals before they can damage skin, it also reduces signs of irritation.

Research has also shown this plant extract can inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end-products or AGEs. These are collagen-damaging proteins and fats that form in the skin as a reaction from exposure to sugars. Left unchecked, AGEs can contribute to wrinkles and loss of firmness.

Cetearyl Olivate facilitates the retention of moisture in the skin and increases active ingredient's resistance to water and sweat. It helps soften the skin and hair and gives creams a smooth and luxurious feel.

Trehalose a sugar commonly found in plants and is used in cosmetics and personal care products. Trehalose hydrates the skin and has anti-oxidizing properties. When applied on the skin, Trehalose allows it to retain moisture thus protecting against dry skin and helps reduce the visible signs of aging.

Arginine has been shown to have antioxidant activity. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Free radicals damage important cellular components, such as the cell membrane, DNA, and cellular proteins like collagen. Damaged collagen is a major factor that contributes to the appearance of aged skin. Therefore, by using topical antioxidants like arginine, the skin will be better protected from free radicals.
