Hyperpigmentation & Melasma

Hormonal issues are a very common issue we see in our skin clinic brought on by Menopause, pregnancy or inflammation. I am not a scientist but I can conclude that the body is going through physical changes that trigger Melanocytes in our skin. Woman see many changes including texture, moisture loss and discoloration that often times lead to melasma a more modeled form of darkened patches in the skin verses Hyperpigmentation.
One of the first products we think of when treating the skin for these issues, besides advising our clients to come in for a pigment peel, is prescribing a product that inhibits production of Melanin and is calming.
I like to recommend a calming toner, Ginseng Mineral Toner i a Golden liquid with the pleasant scent of Ginseng, Chamomile and Geranium. This multi-functional hydrating toner provides natural proteins to help maintain elasticity, bio-extracts effective in hydrating and minerals that possess stimulating abilities. A slight flush will give the skin a healthy glow. The circulation stimulates blood flow which is beneficial for stagnant skin, and is good for Melasma, Dry Skin, Hyperpigmentation if applied after cleansing. The Chamomile is calming, thus helping the skin not be as reactive.

I love to advise layering these two serums and the first contains
Niacinamide, Our Neuropeptide & Growth Factor Serum with Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, Niacinamide can improve the appearance of enlarged pores, brighten dull skin, as well as defend against environmental toxins. Niacinamide also has a hydrophilic molecular structure, meaning it attracts water from its environment and is loaded with peptides and brighteners. Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Ricotta Flower Extract, PCA, Sodium PCA, Sh-Oligopeptide-1, Sh-Oligopeptide-2, Sh-Polypeptide-1, Sh-Polypeptide-11, Sh-Polypeptide-9, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 by itself will start improvement because they are powerhouses in building Collagen, Fine Lines and dry skin.
Ascorbic Acid in Our Exceptionelle C Serum with Ferulic, has shown many benefits for treating skin with Melasma and the issues that come with hormonal changes.
Ascorbic Acid is an antioxidant and prevents skin damage from the inside out, reducing pigmentation and fine lines.
Niacinamide can be layered with Ascorbic Acid.
These three suggestions are a way to jump start inflammation, dryness, and hormonal issues. The next step is adding an a.m. cream that can be layered as the last step in the p.m., and a.m. the last step prior to SPF.
I always recommend our W. Skin Laboratory a.m. Cream for Melasma. When it comes time to add to the arsenal of treatment products, I love recommending W.skin Laboratory a.m. Cream. This is a formulation that is from South Korea and is so complex I decided to offer it on our site.
The Power House - Adenosine increases collagen production (hello, plump skin) and may also help wounds, cuts, and scrapes heal faster. We love a talented and multi-tasking skincare ingredient.
What is adenosine?
Adenosine is present in all types of plant, animal, and human life. Let’s all rewind to our high school biology classes. Remember ATP? Well, ATP = adenosine triphosphate, just one of the derivatives of adenosine. It’s an absolutely essential, high-energy molecule that hoards the energy we literally need to live and exist. It’s found naturally in our bodies, but for cosmetics, it is extracted from yeast.
What is Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract?
Polygonum Cuspidatum root extract is a plant whose root is a good source of the potent polyphenolic antioxidant trans-resveratrol, which is considered the most bioavailable form of resveratrol.
Also known as Japanese knotweed, Mexican bamboo, and, in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Hu Zhang, this plant not only helps thwart free radicals before they can damage skin, it also reduces signs of irritation.
Research has also shown this plant extract can inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end-products or AGEs. These are collagen-damaging proteins and fats that form in the skin as a reaction from exposure to sugars. Left unchecked, AGEs can contribute to wrinkles and loss of firmness.
Cetearyl Olivate facilitates the retention of moisture in the skin and increases active ingredient's resistance to water and sweat. It helps soften the skin and hair and gives creams a smooth and luxurious feel.
Trehalose is a sugar commonly found in plants and is used in cosmetics and personal care products. Trehalose hydrates the skin and has anti-oxidizing properties. When applied on the skin, Trehalose allows it to retain moisture thus protecting against dry skin and helps reduce the visible signs of aging.
Arginine has been shown to have antioxidant activity. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, the unstable molecules that contribute to the formation of premature wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Free radicals damage important cellular components, such as the cell membrane, DNA, and cellular proteins like collagen. Damaged collagen is a major factor that contributes to the appearance of aged skin. Therefore, by using topical antioxidants like arginine, the skin will be better protected from free radicals.
Our Photo-Aging Treatment Creme, a p.m. treatment cream which would be your last step will go in and start to lighten, and treat the Melasma, while providing hydration. This cream can be used over your serums and can be neutralized if you feel it's too sensitizing in the beginning. Your skin will build a tolerance for this product. You can then add our Rectifying+ Retinol & Retinoate Serum prior to the cream when you want to accelerate the progress.
How it Works
With a unique, silky cream texture, this AHA exfoliant refines skin texture without stripping away moisture. Glycolic acid targets dead skin and sweeps it away from the surface to visibly firm, brighten and reduce the appearance of fi ne lines and wrinkles. Pyruvic and lactic acids help to calm and hydrate as they support the exfoliation process. Naturally derived squalane from olives mimics the skin’s natural sebum, hydrating and bringing balance to dry, mature or sensitive skin types. Avocado and soybean oils soften, smooth and condition freshly exfoliated skin.
